IS YOUR CONSCIENCE FORMED YET?
Recently, my darling wife has been stuck in her design mode of trying to create a silk purse out of the sow’s ear with her patio furniture and potted plants. She has great taste for comfortable chairs, and a marvelous selection of flowers and ivy. However, her daily occupation has been to change what she arranged the day before. Again and over again. I am neutral, but began to think, something is wrong here.
My prayer for her, along with the thousand other individuals, has produced the title for today’s post. When I Googled the short phrase, the offerings seemed only to be Catholic teaching. I read this out loud and concluded easily the principle here can apply with Vivian, but also with our country, politics, party platforms, and presumptive candidate at large.(adw.org)
And speaking openly about the biased media reports lately, no one has any answer closer than this than our Catholic Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan. I Just heard him say on MSNBC, he would recommend that every citizen vote according to his conscience. Of course, he has learned the meaning of our conscience, being Catholic. But we don’t have this yet.
THE CONSCIENCE ACCORDING TO CATECHISM
“1776, Deep within his conscience, man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil, sounds in his heart at the right moment … for man has in his heart a law inscribed by God … his conscience is man’s most secret core and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths.” (www.vatican.va)
“THE FORMATION OF CONSCIENCE”
“1783, Concience must be informed and moral judgment enlightened. A well-formed conscience is upright and truthful. It formulates its judgments according to reason, in conformity with the true good willed by the wisdom of the Creator. The education of conscience is indispensable for human beings who are subjected to negative influences and tempted by sin to prefer his own judgment and to reject authoritative teaching.”
THE CERTAIN JUDGMENT
“1800, A human being must always obey the certain judgment of his conscience. And 1802, The Word of God is a light for our path. We must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it in practice. This is how moral conscience is formed.”
“THE IDEAL CONSCIENCE: CORRECT AND CERTAIN”
Fr. Kenneth Baker in his work for Fundamentals of Catholicism (Ignatius Press, 1983), tells us; “A person may think he is justified in perpetuating an act of terrorism, he might even be sincere. But that doesn’t make terror and murder good. Today, due to philosophical currents of subjectivism and relativism, many persons tend to absolutize the individual conscience. . .
“They neglect the objective principles of morality and claim that an action is good or bad simply because they think it is good or bad. Some of the results of this mentality are a breakdown in public morality, increased violence in the streets, premarital sex, shoplifting, and so forth. . .
“We should cultivate not only a good moral conscience, but also a Christian conscience — which is something much more. In addition to reason, we have the added advantage of grace — personal grace, revelation, the teaching of the Church and good examples of the saints.
“We should learn to judge all things in the light of salvation offered to us in Jesus Christ. He is the model and examplar, for He is the Way and the Truth and the Life.”
CURRENT EVENTS INCLUDED WITH LOVE
We can know in our conscience (heart of hearts), that we will come to positive solutions. Whether with my wife’s patio, porch designs, the presidential conventions, laws for moderate gun-control measures, immigration or terrorism, our consciences being properly formed not by social media, cable networks, but family, Church and proper allegiances.
I am being shown to live according to my conscience. I hope this post is helpful for you too. Even if it does take a lifetime to form our conscience, knowing it can be done, that our Savior, his Mother, and all the saints will help us; and the increased years of living to do this, is far worth all our efforts. But that’s not all!
I am now consoled that my wife is in this lifetime process, right along with me. And all we are doing over and over again is more than recreation. It is only our consciences striving for the perfection we were created to achieve. How we will vote come November, is another matter. But I now believe the collective conscience of our party will be well formed by then.
May the Lord bless and keep you,
